Applied Linguistics Glossary List
Here is the beginning of an Applied Linguistics Glossary list I made using the glossary template code from www.labodanglais.com. You can find the template in Lesson 3. Applied Linguistics is the science of how languages are used and learned, and also how they are taught. I did an MA thesis in Applied Linguistics which focused on the learning of English pronunciation.
- Applied Linguistics
- The study of the sound system of a language or languages.
- bilingualism
- Fluency in or the ability to use at least two languages.
- phonology
- The study of the sound system of a language or languages.
- alveolar
- A classification of sounds which are formed at the alveolar ridge (the bone plate behind the upper teeth). Alveolar sounds are formed with the tip or the blade of the tongue. Examples of alveolar sounds in English are /t,d,s,z,l,n/.
- language acquisition
- the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language, as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate
