About Me

Hi! My name is Helen, and I teach English in the Modern Languages Department at Montmorency College in Laval. I have an MA in Applied Linguistics and a graduate certificate in TESL. I have taught English privately, at Ahuntsic college, and at the university level for 3 years in South Korea.

Back when I was a CEGEP student at John Abbott College (one of five English language CEGEPS in Quebec), I studied Creative Arts in preparation for a career in education (although at the time, I wasn't sure that was the direction I wanted to take!) Creative Arts is pre-university program, similar to Visual Arts, which is intended to help prepare students for a career in either the visual arts or education. 

About This Blog

I'm keen to help my students become proficient bloggers in English and help them improve their digital literacy. In this blog, you will find posts related to English online writing skills and their development, as well as posts related to the weekly podcasts I use as listening practice in my class about learning field-related blog writing.

Blogging is relevant to today's workforce. It is also an authentic form of writing and an excellent way to communicate with people around the world on topics that interest you.

I live with my two kids and husband in Montreal, Quebec. I really enjoy running, travelling,  playing music with my family in my free time, and cooking and eating delicious food!

Internships: A Foot in the Door to a Future Career

Tyndale St. Georges Community Center, Little Burgundy, Montreal, Canada Back when I was a university student at Concordia working toward getting my post-graduate TESL degree (Teaching English as a Second Language), I had the wonderful opportunity to do an internship at Tyndale St-Georges in Little Burgundy, Montreal. Tyndale is a community center that offers a number of youth programs for kids aged 6-15 years old, such as early childhood education programs and after school programs for teens. In addition, they have partnered with Concordia University to offer English language classes to both immigrants and refugees. This allows teaching interns at Concordia the chance to get some much needed on-the-job-training teaching adults English, as well as the opportunity to put into practical application some of the pedagogy being learned in their theoretical classes. How to Do Well at School

Our first podcast of the semester from the Actively Engaged Online Series was How to do Well at School.  It was full of useful tips on how to become a successful college student which, let's face it,  isn't always easy.  Adapting to a new school environment and a new program, making time for old and new friends, and often having to work a part-time job while going to school can surely make things a challenge for any new college student. However, like anything else you want to become good at, becoming a good student takes practice, dedication and hard work. I wasn't always a stellar student at college. One of the things that I could have done better was to keep better track of my assignments and to seek help from my teachers more often.
